Shipra Bhattacharya

Shipra Bhattacharya (born 1954, Kolkata) is a leading contemporary Indian artist known for her evocative and sensuous explorations of the female experience. Her work centers around the inner consciousness of women, portraying them with a quiet strength, layered desire, and enigmatic charm. While the female form remains central to her compositions, it is used not as portraiture but as a vehicle for deeper emotional and psychological narratives.
Characterized by soft brushwork, vibrant colors, and symbolic imagery, Shipra’s paintings often depict women whose backs are turned to the viewer—tattooed with icons that speak of both fulfillment and longing. Her style seamlessly blends boldness with subtlety, creating a visual paradox that is both powerful and intimate.
Educated at the College of Arts and Crafts and the College of Visual Arts in Kolkata, she has been exhibiting her works since 1981. Shipra’s art has featured in major solo and group exhibitions across India and internationally, including shows at the India Habitat Centre (New Delhi), Art Alive Gallery, and Cork Street Gallery (London).
Her art continues to resonate for its unique portrayal of femininity—at once mystical, emotional, and intensely human.
