Ramananda Bandyopadhyay

Ramananda Bandyopadhyay (b. 1936, Birbhum, West Bengal) is a prominent Indian painter and a leading figure of the Bengal School of Art. A student of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, he trained under Nandalal Bose, whose influence is evident in his lyrical, romantic style. His work is distinguished by a restrained, earthy palette—dominated by reds, browns, and greens—drawn from personal memory and inspired by his mother’s fondness for paan.

Ramananda’s art draws deeply from Indian mythology, religious iconography, and the rural life of Bengal, portraying gods, goddesses, and the quiet dignity of ordinary people. Though steeped in tradition, his compositions are rooted in contemporary technique, bringing grace and harmony to both sacred themes and everyday scenes.

A recipient of multiple national awards, including four Academy Awards and the Abanindranath Puraskar, he has exhibited widely across India and abroad. He served as Director of the Art Museum at the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith and remains an active figure in Kolkata’s art and heritage circles. His work is celebrated for blending cultural heritage with a timeless visual elegance.
